UPDATE 1-Lawsuit says HP printer cartridges die before use
Tue Feb 22, 2005 03:15 PM ET
(Adds HP comment)

LOS ANGELES, Feb 22 (Reuters) - A Georgia woman has sued Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ.N), claiming the ink cartridges for their printers are secretly programmed to expire on a certain date, in some cases rendering them useless before they are even installed in a printer.

"The smart chip is dually engineered to prematurely register ink depletion and to render a cartridge unusable through the use of a built-in expiration date that is not revealed to the consumer," the suit said.

I have heard that HP wants to make the ink cartridges region coded (like DVDs) so that you won't be able to buy lower priced cartridges in China and use them in the USA. That makes sense. If this lawsuit is true I have a feeling HP will find itself in an untenable position and will have to change it's practice. Or at least offer to exchange outdated cartridges for fresh ones.

Maybe this dating thing is a move to prevent the ink cartridges from being refilled and re-used? Just another bit of tarnish for the HP brand name...
