Food Stamp Nation: A little town in Rhode Island shows where liberalism and all its talk of economic "security" ultimately leads — a stale economy and suffocating dependence on big government.

In a surprisingly candid and lengthy expose, the Washington Post described how Woonsocket, an economically depressed town in Rhode Island, has been turned upside down by food stamps.

With a third of the town enrolled, food stamps have created a huge boom-and-bust economy in Woonsocket, as residents pour into grocery stores on the first day of each month after the government pumps $2 million into their food stamp cards.

Many of the jobs in Woonsocket depend on food stamps, the Post found, with part-time work "clustered around the first of the month."

The heavy reliance on food stamps has also encouraged a variety of weird and irresponsible behavior.

One shopper profiled by the Post paid cash for lunch at Burger King after spending the morning buying $200 worth of groceries with food stamps.

Others end up paying $5 for cab rides home on the first of the month, because the buses are too packed with food shoppers.

Still others jam their carts full at the local Wal-Mart the last night of the month, waiting until the clock strikes midnight to put it all on their food stamp cards.

No matter how well-meaning programs like food stamps are, they can end up draining the dignity and self-respect of those who rely on them.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Don't you just love when a liberal plan comes together? "Well-meaning" my ass.

Wal-Mart is open until midnight? - CC

---------------

I know of several of them around here that are open 24 hours. I can't say there aren't others that close, but being open round the clock is not uncommon, here in good ol' free enterprise Texas anyway.

I thought they were all open 24 hours a day 7 days a week? I thought they only closed like on Christmas day and Thanksgiving or something like that? Anyway I'm fairly certain the Wal-marts here in town are open all the time.

My local WalMart closes at 10:00 pm--which is later than any other retail store I can think of. Even Costco closes at 8:30 pm.

... the Post found, with part-time work "clustered around the first of the month."

While in residency (years ago now) loved working in the ER the first few days of the month. Why? All the welfare/SS checks were in the mail and everyone stayed home because they were afraid someone would steal their checks. If anyone came to the ER, you knew they were sick. Made the job so much easier, the ER actually being an ER instead of an entertainment venue.

I guess this doesn't hold true today with EBT cards, etc.

Not in Michigan they aren't. Some are, most aren't. We do have Meijer stores that are open 24/7 364 days of the year though.

My daughter played college basketball, most of it paid for by athletic scholarships and a few small academic scholarships here and there. Her team consisted of 4 white and 6 black girls.

At the 1st of the month, the 6 black girls would receive their monthly Pell grant $ and go on Wal-Mart shopping sprees. Loading up on dvds, clothes, shoes and high tech trendy items of the era. In addition, a few days later, some of their moms would show up with grocery sacks full of mostly junk food that they paid for via food stamps.

What is really sad is that these girls were mostly on full athletic scholarships that paid for tuition, books, boarding, food and other fees. Yet they still qualified for welfare.

Another example of how efficient our government operates.

DW and I vacation in CO every summer. If you happen to be in one of the 4 former gold mining towns that have legalized gambling, don't go at the 1st of the month after SS accounts have been funded. You will see tons of buses pull up to fill the casinos so stupid senior citizens can blow it all.

Students getting "bridge cards" (as the food stamps are called here in Michigan) was so common that the state has seen fit to clamp down on it. The problem is that students often don't have income, so they certainly qualify for these programs. It's odd to have a student from a well-to-do family attending the most expensive public university in the country getting welfare... but it still happens. We get bridge cards in as found property all of the time.

I'll do whatever I can to get more boys into Scouts to learn self-reliance. This entitlement crap has to stop.

Are Wal-mart employees in Michigan unionized? If so that might explain the difference.

What should they blow it on? Cruises? More food? Clothes? Starbucks? Give it to their grand-kids? Buy a boat and go bass fishing?

Tele goes to Ham Radio and Accordion conventions. Why is blowing it on gambling any more or less bad or evil than that?

People blow their money in a million different ways. I'm not sure that gambling is that much more evil than anything else.

Speaking of Walmart, I was in there just an hour ago and again I swung by the sporting goods dept to check out the ammo case. A barren wasteland except for .243 and .270 rifle ammo and get this more 7 mag ammo. I cleaned them out last week and here set five new boxes. I didn't get them because I already have enough to start a militia and these were 160 grain and I use 150 for deer hunting and even that is pretty heavy for Texas size deer (Texas size meaning small in this case). And they were $32 a box and I paid $28 last week.

On other Walmart news, I passed a big display of Dukes mayonaisse. Yes Dukes has arrived at wally world. praise be. no more trips to a specialty grocer to find it. Too bad I have pretty much stopped eating sandwiches so mayo lasts a really long time now. I use it in tuna salad and that is about it these days.

I use real mayonnaise in homemade Potato salad, egg salad, deviled eggs, tuna salad, homemade pimento cheese spread, ham salad, chicken salad, cole slaw, macaroni salad, and a few of my homemade salad dressings - like avocado dressing, and homemade green goddess dressing.

My wife likes to put mayonnaise on her toasted cheese sandwiches also.

Whoa! Buy those babies up. I'm waiting for the about twice yearly sale. You can buy Hellman's (ick) anytime on sale, but rarely Dukes.

arrete - Howie approves of this message, I bet.

Not the little Walmart Express grocery store near me. It closes at 10 or 11 pm every night, I forget which.

I was not judging them. I was merely replying to a poster that I had a a similar observation about how people getting money from the gov't would affect consumer behavior after they all got their checks.

However, I was judging the pell grant/welfare system that enables some college kids to get truckloads of welfare cash off of middle class tax payers.

And I don't apologize for it.
