when I retired I made a direct transfer from the 401k plan to a Vanguard IRA. I set up a brokerage account and buy stocks after doing my research. Vanguard charges $20 per trade so it is not for traders just LTBH. I started doing this in February and put all my funds into their money market account and made purchases from there. While the fee is high it is fun picking my own stocks while learning at the same time.
I am in all tech stocks in this account but I have other holdings. I feel that I can do as well as some of the mutual fund managers. I only use about 15% for agressive type stocks. I am down about 5% to date and have a list of possible buys in the next downturn.

Hope this helps and enjoy retirement.
