Let's see - for $1600 a month (I dropped $200 for tax and insurance) you could finance a $335,000 loan on a fixed rate 30 year at 4%.

For $335,000 you could buy a VERY posh 3000 sq ft 4 bedroom 3 bathroom with marble and hardwoods on a nice lot in northern Alabama. Good schools, high average income, low crime, well educated populice (home of Space Camp and Boeing and dozens of other engineering firms).

And yeah, $200 a month is realistic for taxes and insurance in this area.

Many great hospitals, too.

DH grew up in NYC. He said when you live there you can't imagine living anywhere else - but once you leave, you can't imagine going back.

We're talking $21,000 a year FOR RENT with no equity built.
