College Professor Censors Anti-Obama Comment on Free Speech Wall

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-k1bRnowqZk

Last year, college censorship took a turn for the ridiculous when a professor at Sam Houston State University vandalized a student-sponsored "free speech wall" with a box-cutting knife to remove anti-Obama speech he didn't like. When the students complained about the vandalism to the campus police, the police took the professor's side and demanded still more censorship, leading students to dismantle the wall. Morgan Freeman [no relation to the actor], the student who organized the protest, recounts this amazing and disturbing story in FIRE's latest video.

Hmmm. Several thoughts.

- Sam Houston State is where my best friend in HS graduated. It is about an hour or so north of Houston, a very conservative area. I'm guessing this prof will get a load of hostility from the sons and duaghters of that area.

- The wall was splattered with F words and other bad language. Pretty tackless if you ask me. I mean, people should still show a smidgeon of decency. Ya I know, the left does it all the time. But we should be better than them.

- How far should free speech go? Do people have the right to go up to me, my family and my 3 young grandsons and start shouting F words at us? If so, I have the right to plug your tackless, putrid face with my fist.

That is all.

As Art will tell you, that is my achilles heel. <g> Anyway, I've had some foul words said to me and I can walk away.

I can't take it if it is done to or around my wife and kids. It's just not right.

I've never had anyone come up to me or my wife and start yelling obscenities. I go out of my way to avoid places (like bars) where that might be likely to happen. I especially like to avoid places where people are drinking alcohol because it loosens people's inhibitions and some people are mean drunks.

Once again you tell blatant lies. The professor cut out the "F-word", not the anti-Obama speech. It is amazing how you will lie and distort reality to further your ideology.

I thought you folks supported biblical morality. Number nine of the ten commandments: "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor".

It's what happens when you give people like Colovion too much power.

I'd be shocked if that happened here... either someone posting something anti-0bama or my department not filing it as vandalism if a Prof. shredded it, lol!

Interesting story:

Back when I worked dispatch (many, many moons ago) I took a call from someone on campus very upset about a sign someone was holding out on the Diag (or maybe it was just near the Diag, doesn't matter really). All it said was "F--- Israel!" and the "s" in Israel was replaced with a swastika. The caller was jewish and, needless to say, wasn't happy about the sign.

I sent out an officer who looked, said, "Yup, that's what it says." and left. We couldn't do a thing about it. Free speech, even heinous speech, is protected.

It's the same reason there is a "Hash Bash" on the Diag every year. You can talk about legalizing marijuanna all you want... but if you have any on you and you're caught we go by the state law on campus (not Ann Arbor's silly $50 civil infraction) and you'll be arrested and (theoretically) face up to $1200 and a year in jail (not that anyone ever in the history of Washtenaw County has gotten anything close to that punishment, lol!) But if you want to bring your dog and paint a pot leaf on the side of it (I've seen it happen) go right ahead! Just keep the dog on a leash... not doing so is a $50 ticket ;-)

These "kids" on campus are basically all adults (in Michigan anyone 17 or older is an adult in the eyes of the legal system). They can't drink until they're 21 (which is crap, frankly, but I don't get to make the laws) but if they get in trouble mommy and daddy can't exactly helicopter in and save them. They have to go to court and deal with it like adults. That means we treat them like adults. If they want to say stupid crap then so be it, it's their reputation. We're not here to keep them from making keisters out of themselves. If they want to parade around with signs saying F-this and F-that then, hey, they can.

In fact sometimes they do that then they go on to be, oh, the state Senator representing Ann Arbor in Lansing (my "illustrious" state senator was involved with protests against the formation of what would become the police department I work for now). It is what it is.

I avoid places like that too. So it does not happen much. But I seem to be a trouble magnet. Weird things happen to me a lot. Minding my own business and then wammo, weird people do weird things to or around you.

Here are just a few off the top of my head.

The worse incident was at a 'pro-life' chain when the kids were young A bunch of families making a chain across University Street in Denton TX about a mile long showing support of the 'pro-life' movement and the Crisis Pregnancy Center where my wife volunteered. We obeyed all laws and let people walk/drive through when they needed to. It lasted just a few hours but the amount of obscenities directed at us was startling and troubling towards mostly young families. It was very difficult for me to hold back as the cowards shouted and fingered as as they drove off.

I punched a guy in the face once when DW and I were out on a date at a movie theater. We had not been married long. He grabbed my wife and told her he wanted to 'f' her, not knowing she had a rather large husband returning from the snack line. Down and out for the count. I walked up to a worker, explained what happened and we went into the movie.

A guy followed us home one night in his BOT. I drove a Datsun B210 back in the day so I guess the redneck assumed he had an edge on whoever occupied the tiny car. I'm was not really paying much attention until he drives right up behind me after we parked in the driveway and shines his lights on bright. He runs out of the BOT, wearing his cowboy hat and boots, yelling obscenities about how I almost killed him on the road. He was drunk so it was hard to understand him. Probably delusional. He wanted me to step out of the car and fight him. I did. He threw a punch and I ducked. He fell on the ground off balance. I just watched him for a sec as he got up and charged me. Besides being 6'5" and a weight lifter, back then I was an accomplished martial artist that trained regularly and competed in an occasional tournament. I decided not to punch him with my fist because, well frankly, that hurts like hell. So I heel kicked him upside the head. Not as hard as I could...but enough to stop him and get his attention. He laid on the ground a few minutes while I made sure he had no weapons in his truck. I helped him get up, took him to the truck and told him to leave and if I ever saw him again on my property, I would bust his kneecaps off so he'd never walk normal again.

Then there was the time I took my 10 yo son to a Cowboys game. There were about 4 drunk young men a couple of rows behind us spilling popcorn, spraying beer on us and yelling out a generous amount of 'F' words. My buddy, a 6'2 Hispanic with his 10 yo son finally had enough after dealing with it for 30 minutes. We turned around and asked them nicely for the sake of the women and children around them to stop it. They told us to F-off. I lost it and started charging up the steps toward them. A bystander, grabbed me and told me "It's not worth it...my wife has already left to get security." A moment of common sense took over and I chose to listen. Security came and escorted the 4 men out.

If you ask me, it's tacky -- which means its full of tack. <grin>

Geez. When I first read this story, it was worded differently and I thought it was about "the" Morgan Freeman. Which struck me as odd because I seemed to remember reading recently that he had died. Which itself turned out not to be true and just one of those internet hoaxes. In summary, I'm very confused.

(I also recently read online that Macaulay Culkin had died at age 30 in 2010, apparently from doing too many drugs, and wondered how come I'd never heard about it. Then I found out he is still very much alive.)
