Reminds me of my pre-doc period. There were times we were so poor we went out for dinner rather than buy groceries, because we could charge the meal rather than fronting cash for groceries. It never ocurred to me to ask my parents for help, even though I'm sure it would have been forthcoming and they could well afford it. Post-doc was little better, until I started consulting at $15 (1966) per hour, and then my wife passed her exams and received a license and things got decidedly easier.
