Harrodshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HarrodsWith 6 floors, 5 acres, 5,000 employees, and 1,000,000 feet of sales floor it is easy to get lost. This isn't your average Bloomingdales. Years ago when I was much younger I was quite put off by the whole concept. The enormity is just overwhelming at times. The international parade of shoppers, cacophony of languages, grotesque exuberance of frivolous wealth and the needless excess of pleonastic capital. The second floor has the designer departments. Lanvin, Valentino, Chanel, Stella McCartney, Chloe, Alexander McQueen...etc. Now, I am, in the kindest use of the 2828 term a "hayseed" in this world. I clung strongly to my haute couture bigoted antipathy with a tenacious grip. Under patient guidance of my DIL, I was given an in depth tutorial of the business, fabrication, and marketing of the alien world that precedes pret-a-porter. All in all it is an amazing world, and have opened my closed mind to a new reality. The whole exercise was as close as I get to a personal growth experience.I have changed my mind about Harrods as well. The fact that this archaic economic engine can still exist is, overall a wonderful thing. There is still one place on the planet where you can buy anything that can be sold. If you want a pink D11T/D11T CD Track-Type Caterpillar Tractor, they will make it happen and they will deliver it for a price.Went to Hampton Court todayhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hampton_Court_PalaceIn its own way it was as excessive as anything that exists today. Bottom line of Hampton Court is that it's good to be King, it sucks to be Archbishop. Finished up the day with a Jack the Ripper night tour, normally not my cup of tea, but it turned out to be interesting. Walked the route of the 5 murders and got the East-End willies and shivers. The gruesome details were not spared. Grabbed a cab back to Knightsbridge for a late dinner, and managed to get in Lady Gaga's way as she left exit 8 of Harrods. Seems she was doing a promotion for some perfume, distinguished by being a black liquid....don't ask. Finished dinner, came back to watch the Bronco's game. It is on in my son's and Dil's room but all we get...on the same channel mind you... is ALJAZ, Al Jazeera. Ummm, no thank you.mcb
