From reading the Mafia reviews, there were a couple alarm bells that kicked off in my head. The two big ones are:

- driving around seems pointless and/or difficult to control from mouse

- there are several escort missions where the people you're trying to escort are, basically, idiots. The reviewers almost universally derided the AI for these reasons

Driving around in Mafia would be pointless with the mouse. Thankfully, you don't use the mouse while driving. :) You could use the mouse while driving to do a "drive-by" shooting but in the entire single-player campaign I never once did such a thing. I did get lost in the city at the beginning of the game and then I discovered the well-documented TAB key, which displays a detailed map while driving. Doh!

The cars were hard to control but that was a design decision probably related to the abilities of the cars in that era. I actually found the under-powered, hard-to-control cars a refreshing change from GTA3's (and other game's) rocket cars on rails.

As far the escort missions go - I barely remember them. What I do remember is that while the AI was not great, I would die more often than the people I was "guarding" (they usually had guns of their own). True, those missions were tougher than ones with just me but I thought that was the point.

The enemy AI was nothing to write home about, either, but it was hardly what I would call bad. Just average, really.

Since you liked No One Lives Forever 2 so much I'm hesitant to recommend Mafia to you. I thought NOLF2 was fun but rather short and frustrating in portions. I was glad to be finally finished (but I only once felt like NOT finishing, if that makes sense). With Mafia I wanted to continue playing and even did a few of the extra "Free Ride Extreme" missions before finding those missions more frustrating than fun.
