Welcome to Low Carb Way of Life FAQ!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why is the board named Low Carb Way of Life? Isn't Low Carb a diet?
“Low-carbing is not a short-term diet, in that you can't ever go off of it. You can slowly ease into maintenance phases in which you allow yourself more of the formerly "forbidden" foods, but you simply cannot revert back to your old eating (or non-exercising) ways. That is one reason why many of us refer to low-carbing as a Way of Life, or Way of Eating... to retrain our thinking that we are going to follow this plan for long term, not just as a way to lose initial weight.” ~ plaidprincess
What are some examples of topics on this board?
Low Carb recipes (indexed courtesy of ROTJob), stories of successes and challenges, sharing ideas & experiences, support & motivation, product and restaurant reviews, links to LC articles, information on various LC plans, and friendly conversations. Here's some informative posts:
Are any topics off-limits?
We welcome all viewpoints, but keep in mind that 1) this is not a battleground for the never-ending Low Carb vs. Low Fat vs. Low Cal debate, and 2) trolling posts such as “you're all idiots whose organs are about to dissolve” prove to be more disruptive than constructive.
Is Low Carbing safe?
You've probably heard all the myths… ketosis is dangerous, Low Carbing causes kidney problems, etc. There's a huge amount of misinformation circulating – propagated by uninformed media, by nutritionists who refuse to admit that they could have been wrong to focus on low-fat all these years, and by animal-rights activists that can't stand the thought of people eating meat as a source of protein.
Here's a link that should answer many of your questions: http://atkins.com/why/debunking-the-myths.html
Where can I find Low Carb products?
Natural LC foods (e.g. veggies, meat, cheese, eggs) are generally located along the walls of supermarkets. Using the “shop the perimeter” method helps to avoid the processed, sugary items located in the center aisles.
Most grocery stores also have sections dedicated to LC items such as shakes, power bars and bake mixes. You may also find these items in drug stores or Wal*Mart.
Still can't find what you're looking for? Here's some specialty shops:
Online:
Netrition: http://www11.netrition.com/lowcarb_page.html
CarbSense: http://carbsense.com/product_info.htm
Vitacost: http://www.vitacost.com/products/yourhealth/LoCarbs.cfm?lchqbid=8085
Stores:
Are there any Low Carb magazines?
How can I find out how many carbs are in different foods?
