Thanks for your input, but I must admit, I'm confused about the newspaper. What is it for?

I'm thinking I'll put my beds on the former location of a playground set. It's already level ground (unlike the rest of my slightly sloped lot), but I'll have to remove a bunch of small rocks and a tiny mesh that the previous owners had there.
