"They do. Except that now they're called Family Practitioners and they have to do a residency and get boarded, so that they no longer feel low man on the totem pole because they don't have a "specialty."

They're also called Primary Care Providers or PCPs. My own PCP, whom I've had going on 20 years is an Internist/Surgeon who decided to expand his practice by providing primary care as well. Although a solo practitioner, he has a thriving practice.
