<< I am going to retire January 1st. My retirement $$ will consist of deferred compensation. I understand that social security taxes will not be withheld because I will not have any earned income. My questions is what if I decided to work part time. Will I then have to pay social security taxes on my deferred comp since I will now have some earned income >>

No. You pay Social Security and Medicare tax only on current earned income.
