The people who made money during the gold rush weren't the miners, but the merchants who sold goods to them.

I'd thus suggest that a company can either have market dominance through a strong consumer brand, or be a company that has market dominance "behind the scenes" of either other companies with consumer branding or products with a large market. Companies like CMGI, NITE, and even T would fit this particular criteria.
