The fact that this time it's a 'conservative' personality is irrelevent. Public figures, liberal or conservative, are responsible for the words that come out of their mouths in public (or whenever there might be a microphone on). They are public figures, talking is 90% of their job. This being said, how can you NOT hold him, or anyone else for that matter, accountable for inappropriate statements?
