You might want to investigate the AT&T Universal Mastercard. It's a gold card I have that was without an annual fee--for life! At least that's the deal I got. I'm not sure if it's still the case for new members, but it's worth a shot.

I keep that card as an extra for emergencies, and for renting cars. One of the perks I like is the coverage it gives for that, especially in Aruba. Of course, for all other things, I still use the Citibank AA Visa for the airmiles.
