Yeah, that sort of statement is descriptive, not qualitative.

Range is grossly overrated. After all, the idea is to portray each single part the best way possible. If your part calls for a John Wayne-type, do you call DeNiro and try to get him to play John Wayne or do you just get John Wayne.

I mean, OK, maybe Wayne's not so good a choice today but still.

Spacey is a talented guy with gaudy taste in his roles. He loves the roles that set his character up for sainthood. The "significant" (in all the worst connotations of the term) roles. Like all those roles Jim Carrey takes on when he wants to make another stab at Oscar.
