When I spoke to the lady at Experian, she told me that mini-checks don't hurt. They are only shown to the you the creditee and not to creditors. As far as how long these dings stay. That was a little less clear to me. She said that each creditor will rate the risk differently so one may not care if 5 requests were made in the last 12 months while another may not like 3. I can't remember how long the requests stay on our reports, but I now that they are at least one year. Sorry I can't help you there.
