<<if there was an easy way to take crime stats from harlem and the op's home city, data on risk taking and perceived risk, and related info and compute then i'm sure we could have a nice answer for this ot subject.>>

Ok, just for CONVERSATION, we sure could. :) There'd be the question about matching populations; getting a per-capita rate..

Here's what I found though, just for curiosity:

The population of the area in NYC in question is 61,027. In 2002, There were 12 murders, 35 rapes, 366 robberies, and 450 felony assaults.
Closest I could find from my area was for the whole county:

16 murders, 84 rapes, 504 robberies, and 357 aggravated assualts. Quite similar, even a little higher! However, the 2002 population was estimated at 1 MILLION. That's fifteen times the population!

So, I think there's a difference.

Ok. So there it is. Harlem has more crime than Fairfax Virginia. It's more dangerous. It's far away from me. I'd rather not go if I didn't have to.. I don't see what's so "insulting" about that.
