Actually, we have a huge amount of sodium in our water. Around here, if you're pregnant, the first thing the doctor tells you is "Don't drink the water" I did not realize that sodium could cause the white marks, but your description of how hard the deposits were to remove is very similar to what we have going on in the shower. I'll probably call one of our local tile stores and see if they have anything that would work. Thanks for the tip.
