Actually, yes. The basic requirements for coverage are mandated by the Office of Personnel Management. There is room for variety in the plans and employees/retirees choose from among them. The standards are strict and some plans drop out, but most do very well.

The fact of the matter is that it is a Government plan in conception and funding. The insurance companies find that it works for them and most of the insured are happy with it.

I am not saying that this plan is best for the whole nation. My limited purpose is to demonstrate once again that something run by the Government is not destined to be a disaster. Once we understand this, it becomes easier to look at various proposals without the ideological blinders.
