Making it difficult to divorce actually worked pretty well to bind families together for thousands of years.

OK; I'll play along and pretend that we live in conservative bizarro land where we can just click our heals together and wish really hard and suddenly the divorce laws will be tough again, or better yet it will be impossible. There, POOF! It's done. Divorce is now forbidden.

Now, how are you going to get some of these dysfunctional folks to get married in the first place?
