If you stayed away from the dot.coms and invested in the Microsofts, HP,Dell, etc. we need to get to 3500(a guesstimate) to "be back.">>>

Just think of it as investing in Nasdaq-100, i.e. more as an index than particular stock picking. If you think of it this way, 3500 will not be enough by a long shot.
