Well, snarlings beasts doesn't sound too good, so maybe what you're dealing with is on the extreme end of the norm, if that makes any sense.

Outside the norm for me (by my unprofessional assessment) would be a situation where you sense it is unsafe for them to be around each other or one or both is causing the other some kind of psychological or emotional suffering.

Are they able to eat a meal at the same table without strife most of the time or any of the time? or be in the same room, engrossed in the same television program without being tempted to go at each other?

I'm remembering that even though my brother and I sniped all the time, we could eat or watch television together a good amount of the time without taunting/picking/fighting, etc.
