<"The NHS will ban patients from surgery indefinitely unless they lose weight or quit smoking>

Not only are those people undesirable and ineligible for most healthcare services, they still get to have an enormous amount of their earnings going to pay for their wonderful healthcare system.

I am not sure just where the proverbial line should be drawn.

There are a lot of items that go into considering the parameters of a given policy. Lifelong smokers definitely consume much more healthcare costs on average than non smokers. Of course, many of them die from smoking related diseases at ages less than the average lifespan. Now as a rule, many heavy smokers tend to not be obese because they smoke. Many smokers who quit smoking end up packing on the pounds and become overweight or obese from doing so. So trying to move them from one exempt category can often end up putting them into another, via unintended (but not unexpected) consequences.

A even a non smoker can consume many dollars of healthcare. One may be an alcoholic or drug abuser. They could also be unlucky via their genes and be susceptible to illnesses or conditions that also consume lots of health dollars.

The bottom line is that the UK has a finite number of dollars to spend on healthcare. Major rationing is the ultimate endgame for any nationalized healthcare system. Limits on who qualifies or how long one must wait if they do qualify are all hard truths that they will never tell you while they are promoting it. The left pushed back hard on Sarah Palin and her death panels. You can call it whatever you want to, but it is simply what you get under such a system. What do you think a 6 month wait under the VA amounts to when you have a condition in need of immediate treatment?

As usual, what things are sold as seldom represents what they actually are or will become.
