If you look at a Major Medical policy, the rates are more reasonable than full medical insurance. I got a quote from Nationwide of $1423 as a non-smoking, 47 year old single male. There is a $1000 deductable, 80/20 co payment, and a $4000 stop loss. While this is not as generous as most employer medical packages, it still works out to be considerably cheaper yet you're cover for hospital stays.
