Maybe we will be better off than developing or 3rd world nations, especially most of Africa, but as our costs go up for rebuilding due to devastated land, we will decline as a nation.

The reason the costs of disasters has increased is because we are wealthier and there is more value at risk. However, greater wealth gives us more resources to deal with problems.

As a 2002 UN environmental report noted, "In richer countries water and air pollution is down, species have been restored to the wild, and forests are increasing in size." So it appears the environment is better in rich countries. Rich countries with market economies.
