My sister, age 55, just had a major stroke and has been confined to a nursing home. She had no insurance and medicaid is pending. She requires 24 hour care so I am privately paying until she is determined disabled by social security. The only assests she has are a small home and a car. I have been told I need to "spend down" in order for her to qualify for medicaid. Can someone tell me when the house is sold what the process is then? Am I expected to pay entire amount to the nursing home at that time and then when that runs out medicaid will kick in? Is it legal to reimburse myself for expenses I am incurring now? Since medicaid doesn't pay for physical therapy, can some of that money be used for therapy? Any idea where I can get answers to these questions? Thanks.
