Mike,

I am an Investment Professional, my very first, on-line discount broker in April 1980 was Rose & Company located on LaSalle Street in Chicago. At that time, I had an office in the Sears Tower, Chicago. -- A few years later Rose & Company was bought by Charles W. Schwab & Company. The acquisition of Rose and the conversion of the accounts from Rose to Schwab went-off without a single hitch.

While Schwab <http://www.Schwab.com> is NOT the absolute lowest priced broker, I only have four to six trades per year or so -- sometimes none.

I also have an account with Scott Trade. Scott Trade is OK but they have fewer investment research resources, and a very antiquated money withdrawal process -- they actually mail a printed check. Since that is totally unacceptable, the account I now have there is being closed at year end 2012 and transferred to another firm. Maybe Merrill Edge -- DO NOT like the fact that they are now part of the VERY EVIL Bank of America.
