Mondale committed what Michael Kinsey calls a "gaffe," that is when politicians tell the truth. Reagan raised taxes in 1986, just like Mondale said he would. It was obvious to everyone taxes had to be raised, even Reagan knew that.

ROFL. Reagan raised taxes in 1986. Therefore his presidency caused a net increase in tax rates?

If you cut rates from 70% to 30% then increase to 35%, in your mind that's raising tax rates, right?

While I'll agree that at some point you get diminishing returns, lower marginal tax rates and growth caused increase tax revenue when going from 70%. I guess Reagan raised taxes in his big tax cut, by lowering rates and reducing deductions.
