Thanks to all who gave excellent advice to my earlier post.

Here's what I did....and where I am...

I downloaded ad-aware and ran it. Found 419 bad files (I don't know where my husband got the idea that it was 4,000+ - perhaps because it scanned over 40,000 files?)...

Anyway. As expected, after running ad aware, I could no longer access the internet (broadband connection). I loaded the
Win Xp disk that came with the computer, and selected upgrade -- it reinstalled the OS (at least it appeared to) without formatting the drive.

Still can't get online. After several calls to my internet provider, and lots of help, discovered that I had a bad socket which was preventing the computer from resetting the ip address.

I am looking for a phone number for Dell tech support (but it seems that most of the help is online, and I still can't get online on the computer that needs a fix)....in the meantime...any suggestions as to how I can fix? Do I need to reformat and reload windows fully? Do I need to download a file from MS?
