Most 401(k)'s have several investment choices. Have you checked yours to see if there is a CD or money market alternative to the stock fund(s) you're invested in now?

Generally you can't transfer money out of a 401(k) into an IRA unless you quit your job, and you won't be able to withdraw money from a 401(k) without paying a 10% penalty unless you're 59.5 years old or older. And no matter what your age you'll still owe regular income tax on any amount you withdraw.
