Most plans allow you to borrow, but it must be returned to your 401k, with interest (which goes into your 401k, so it's not all bad). In effect, the loan becomes an investment of your 401k.

However, if you lose your job, then you will have to repay it within a short period of time (like 60 days), or it will be considered a distribution, with all the tax penalties.
