Much depends on what other sources of income you have and whether these proposed expenditures will be a major burden or not.

Would a 50% survivors benefit be sufficient to support you?

Especially if it is not a major burden, and if you do not have major other sources of income, the $400 for survivors benefit seems like a good idea.

I would be less inclined to buy life insurance. Do you need the insurance?

Fools would remind you that especially retiring at age 52, inflation should be a major concern. You likely will be retired 30 years or more. In that time, your living expenses will probably double at least once, maybe twice. Therefore, Fools would suggest you establish an investment program in stocks if you do not already have one. Growth of these investments could supplement your income in the later years of your retirement.

Best of luck to you.
