Much of the early photography required much longer exposures, and holding a smile for prolongued, several second exposures was difficult.

That might only be part of it.

I'm not sure. I'm wondering if there is a corporation behind it, like Kodak, or if it was more of period thing, like during the roaring 20's when everything was happy. I tend to think it had something to do with marketing. But, I was just hoping some art historian could jump in and help.
