My backpacking days were entirely domestic, but DS backpacked through Western Europe (it was right after college and before he had an apartment, so technically he was homeless!), and DD backpacked her way through West Africa (also technically homeless at the time). She met a lot of Europeans in Africa. I think French young men can do public service in former French colonies in lieu of at-home or military service--she met a few French guys traveling on breaks who were teaching and doing public works projects. She traveled together with a Swiss guy for a couole of days, and spent some time with a few Dutch women, too. Almost everyone she met spoke English, Frrench, or both. She even met a Japanese guy who spoke neither English nor French nor Arabic, but was ambling his way through West & North Africa just the same.
