My family, too, uses the "gift drawing" tradition at Christmas. In our variation, each person is responsible for buying several gifts for the person whose name they draw. We set a dollar amount in advance (quite low when we were kids; higher but still modest now that we are adults). Working within a budget place a real premium on creativity and (though we never thought of it that way at the time) goes a long way towards LBYM. Great fun too.
