My father gave me this advice, which he used when he & my stepmother were considering a post-retirement move: Once you think you like a town, get a subscription to the local paper (on-line or delivered) & check out the news for a few months. He found out that the wonderful-looking small town in Oregon that they were considering actually had a large number of drug-related & often violent crimes & in each week's "police digest report". They opted to stay in their larger-and-more-expensive-but-safer-town in CA.
