My father was able to grow two pretty big pumpkins by accident. They composted their jack-o-lanterns from a prior year (probably two years since they have a three year composting cycle), and they got giant pumpkin vines in one of the spots they used the composted soil.

They ended up getting two decent pumpkins out of it. The vines rotted out and dissolved into a foul smelling mess, but I was able to cut the stem of the pumpkins while they were still turning orange (see http://www.wrjohnston.net/baby/content/images/large/IMG_1442...). They eventually turned orange all over; ironically they ended up back in the compost bin. Maybe they'll be back in 2014.
