My guess would be that he spoke as he did because religion is an important thing in his life, and he wanted to speak personally rather than with a carefully scripted politically-correct impersonal message.

My guess wouldn't coincide with yours, then.

I saw the speech and it was very clear to me that everything he said was carefully scripted by speechwriters. His version of political-correctness just caters to the Christian Coalition, as I see it.
