My local area VITA program is no longer taking volunteers for this tax season as training has ended for now, but I'm certainly going to look into it more for next year.

Terrific! I usually start my VITA solicitations in October for exactly the reason you cite, but this iron was too hot not to take advantage of it. Most programs start trying to round up volunteers early November with training in January.

As a former tax professional, you may have been exempt from some of this--but if you know, what is the training process like for VITA volunteers?

It varies widely by area. IRS produces an extensive training package which can be self-inflicted. Beyond that, most sponsors will have some sort of classroom training, and anyone using the software will have separate software training.
