My neighbor may be the tree Nazi and may want me to cut down all my trees and pave over my yard with concrete, but he still can't tell me what to do on my land.

True, HOA's are best avoided (or, if you can't avoid them at least run it!)

My in-laws had to get permission from their neighbor to put up a rail on their deck as it "could possibly block their view of the water" which was crap as the'd have to be standing on top of their garage for it to block their view. Needless to say the neighbor didn't care so the railing went up and the odds of my son or his cousins falling off onto a rockbed went down. Living on a private lake means you can't escape the HOA.
