My question. How do atheists get this sense?

You assume that atheists need - or want - this sense.

I'm sure some do, but I'm just as sure some don't. My wife is much more social than I, and she attends several discussion groups, book groups, and she volunteers at a horse rescue, which is its own "community."

When we were working, of course, a "group" is generally provided, complete with meetings, conversations, even occasionally parties. Now that we're not working we don't have that, so we have other things. I find I need less, much less, but still get what I want through neighborhood get togethers, on-line forums like the Motley Fool, individual friends and other things.

I know that church is "social" for many people - I would argue almost all people, but that doesn't mean it is for everyone, or even that "social" is something "needed." It's not like food, or water, or air, is it?
