My thanks to Phil Marti and JAFO for their clarifications on specific identification. I take it that the crucial issue is whether or not both parties, seller and broker, are aware at the time of the sale of the designation. Brown & Co. tells me that they don't distinguish lots, but that they will, if instructed, print "highest basis shares sold" or some similar words on the sales confirmation. Maybe this would satisfy the IRS. Maybe other brokers would do the same.Regards,Gerald Harnett
