The neighbors have a fairly nice home and yard now. They've spent the last few months trying to get it ready to sell in a hurry. It was in poor shape, as was the yard. Unfortunately, the husband was diagnosed with something and was going to have to go into a nursing home. So, they hired out a lot of work, including a complete landscaping with some really big equipment. Since this effort started in August, the grass is really lush right now. Everything looks real nice. The terrible part is, Mr. Neighbor is no longer able to enjoy it. Had they done all this work a few years ago when the home started to need it, they'd have paid the same (more or less) but enjoyed it for a few years. We often times think about the choice this way--"Would you rather have the enjoyment and utility of some home improvements, or keep the cash?" I saw saw an example of choice number three--you get neither.
