newsreporter, while Doolan Wesley gets the difference between Costco and Walmart/Dollar General/Target, he doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to "traditional retailers" and hours open Christmas Eve.

Comparing Costco to Walmart or the Dollar General stores is like comparing a pedigree pooch to a mongrel mutt. And while Target exhibits the wide aisles and higher quality of merchandise its quantity is much less than Costco's.

Costco's different business approach is perhaps what makes it an appealing buying target over traditional retailers such as Wal-Mart (WMT), Target (TGT), and Dollar General (DG).

Walmart is anything but a "traditional retailer" having set the retail market on its ear with its volume buying and super low markup which has knocked many (most?) "traditional retailers" for a loop.

Dollar General went Walmart one better specializing in even cheaper seconds and miss marked merchandise Jay Leno regularly makes fun of their, usually foreign made, merchandise (green suited Superman & misspelled & misslabeled merchandise) on the Tonight show.

Target comes closest to Costco with clean stores and upscale merchandise. But the most obvious differences between Target and Costco is the size of the stores and the size of their shopping carts which says something about the size of the variety of their merchandise offerings.

There wasn't that much difference between hours open Christmas Eve of the three chains last year and I expect there'll be little difference between them this year.

This strategy allows Costco the flexibility to not have to be open on the holidays, and to give their employees those days off. This strategy is the opposite of other retail giants that try to attract the biggest crowds possible during the holiday seasons (e.g., Wal-Mart).
