I used to give this assignment when I taught film appreciation (only it was 3, not 5.) The assignment was to find the thread between them (which usually has to do with the characters, rather than plot or genre.

Mine are, (in no particular order)

1. The Red Violin
2. Witness
3. Dances with Wolves
4. The Fugitive
5. American Beauty

The thread between them, for me, is that all of them have to do with characters having to adapt to a different culture or different sub-culture. Witness, DWW and The Fugitive are pretty apparent, The Red Violin, I look at the violin as the character, and with American Beauty it's that the main character is narrating from the perspective of the alternate reality. I think a lot of it, for me, is the idea of being able to survive and adapt to new situations and new challenges life throws at you.
