No, it is not OK to lie to help conceal an adulterous affair, exposing the spouse not only to possible STDs but to 18 years of emotional and financial support for a child that is not his responsibility.

By law, I believe the husband is responsible for the financial well being of the child, whether it is his or not. A man who was duped in this way by his wife took her to court and lost. A child born inside a marriage is the responsibility of the husband, whether or not it is his biologically, unless the laws have changed.

Ethically, the doctor should have answered truthfully that the wife is pregnant and that there is a strong possibility that the vasectomy was a failure. It is then up to the husband to pursue the matter. It is a wife's responsibility to be faithful to her marriage vows or suffer the consequences of her actions.

I do understand the compassion involved in trying to keep the marriage solvent.
