William Knowles passed away. He is best known for developing a process to make left-handed L-Dopa, the drug that revised treatment of Parkinson's Disease.

Many natural products occur in right or left handed forms; one is often far more active than the other. Synthetics normally contain an equal mixture of left and right. Knowles figured out how to make a chiral (handed) catalyst that could produce mostly left handed L-DOPA, the form needed to treat Parkinson's patients.
