We have this American Express card that we typically don't use and just carry as a backup. In November we bought something like $50 worth of stuff on it. I forgot to pay it on time. The new statement arrived - with $0.60 in finance charges (totally fair) and $29 in penalties. Is there a way to talk them out of charging this penalty? Would it be worth it to call them and threaten to close the account if they don't remove the penalty? What do you think?
