Not only here on FIRE boards, but it is interesting listening to people outside of FIRE talk about retirement with my family, friends and co-workers. I hear comments all the time like "I'll never retire now" or "it looks like it will be really tight when I retire with social security, if I get much".

I think that just as things weren't as rosy as they seemed back than, they probably aren't as gray as they seem now.
